The village of Montsaugeon, perched on the side of a hill 338m high, is reflected in a pond that sits at its feet. Visible from far away, the hill that towers over the 60m high neighbouring plain provides a privileged situation, due to the fact that it is easily defendable. For this reason, it has been used for this purpose since early Antiquity.
One size station on wheels dating from the Middle Paleolithic (the oldest human presence in the department) was highlighted recently at the foot of the hill. One can also mention several dozen objects of Neolithic flint found in its territory, and two mounds located on both sides of the road leading to Prauthoy, containing remains from the Bronze Age to la Tene. A discovery that has led some authors to propose around Montsaugeon as the site of the battle between Vercingetorix and Caesar in the days leading up to the siege of Alesia...
