At the start of our era, a rich Lignon, who was concerned about his posthumous reputation, had a funeral monument erected in a carefully chosen position that would dominate the view. Situated on the edge of the Roman road, the monument conveys the richness of the deceased to anyone that beholds it... This splendid tombstone, which takes the form of a slender tower, comprises three levels of Corinthian order.
Over the centuries, the mausoleum was destroyed and used as a quarry. The only part that survived was the base of the massif with its interior blocks visible here.
Situated 16km from Langres, the remains of the Faverolles Gallo-Roman mausoleum also make for exceptional sightseeing. Built in 20 BC, the site of the Gallo-Roman mausoleum has a discovery trail which allows visitors to experience the remains of the tombstone in their own archaeological and geological environment. With the help of the signs along the route, you can find out more about the funeral plot, the Gallo-Roman road network, the limestone quarries...
To understand the reconstruction of the building in its original splendour, it is thoroughly recommended that you visit the Atelier Archéologique de Faverolles (Faverolles Archaeology Studio) where the most beautiful architectural (captials, cornices...) and decorative (lions, tritons, masks) pieces are displayed.
