Anecdotally :
On 9 June 1643 Monsieur Demongeot, guard of the Navarre Tower, ordered the tower's cannons to be fired eighteen times on enemies who had ventured too close to the town. In order to ward off any possible future reoccurrences of this, he requested gunpowder and cannonballs because he had used all that there was in the tower. On 30 June 1809 Guillaume Guérinot obtained a lease for nine years to set up a factory in the tower making sulphuric acid and iron sulphate.Under the Ancien Régime the Champ de Navarre (Navarre Field), today's camping site, was home to the jeu de l'Arquebuze. This shooting competition was organized by the Chevaliers de l'Arquebuze, a kind of club which brought together followers of this practice with a military character. The participants went to the Champ de Navarre armed, drums beating and colours flying. The target (a metal bird) was exposed on the end of a stick on top of the Orval Tower. The winner of the competition (i.e. the first to shoot the bird down) was declared Roi de l'Arquebuze (King of the Arquebus). If somebody shot it down three years running he was entitled to the title of Emperor. Substantial privileges accompanied these honorific titles : exemption from guard duty and payment of octroi on wine...- Informations
