The remains of the Gallo-Roman mausoleum in Faverolles are an exceptional reminder of times past. Built in the first half of the 1st century, the mausoleum is accessed from a forest walk. All the items discovered in Faverolles are now displayed in a museum in the centre of the village. In addition to the visit, there are craft workshops for children and adults, based on everyday life in Gallo-Roman days. Audio-guides are available for visits to the mausoleum and the archaeological workshop.

MANUFACTURE OF A CLAY OIL LAMP
Atelier Archéologique
52260 FAVEROLLES
Fax : 03 25 87 73 33

In order to expand the number and the scope of visitors of the archaeological mausoleum of Faverolles, the Tourist Office of Le Pays de Langres has set up manual workshop. For adults and children, it will compleete the guided tour of the parmanent collection, a series of remains in the only Gallo-Roman mausoleum known in the north-easterly part of France.
After being introduced how those lamps were used in the Antique period and drawing on different replicas, trainees will then start practice. After having digged a vat for the oil, the land is stretched in order to form one or two spouts, as well as the lamp handle. Then, the lid is placed on the vat. A hole in it will keep the flame lively, the lid is adorned with narrative scenes or herbal ornament. The fuse, made up of rolled-up cotton, is placed into the spout. However, it will need a couple of days to dry before being used.
