About Diderot

In the land of Denis Diderot

A renowned philosopher during the Enlightenment, Denis Diderot was born in Langres in 1713. He was the brains behind the Encyclopaedia, and he also wrote a number of provocative works including “Jacques le Fataliste” and "Le neveu de Rameau». The spirit of Langres’ most famous son can still be felt today – a square and a street bear his name, and of course, there is a statue of him. Diderot was very fond of his native town.

The local museum exhibits several items that pertain to its most famous son.
